Liyuan, Classical Chinese garden on Li Lake shore in Jiangsu, China
Liyuan is a classical Chinese garden on the shore of Li Lake, spanning about 8 hectares with water elements taking up roughly one-fifth of the total area. The space combines pavilions, vegetation, and carefully arranged hills and rocks that flow naturally together.
The garden takes its name from Fan Li, a minister of the Yue state who traveled these waters after his kingdom defeated the Wu state in ancient times. The site connects this historical water legacy to gardening methods that were refined and passed down through generations.
The garden reflects traditional Chinese design principles, where water, stone, and plants work together to shape the space. Visitors experience this balance as they walk through different areas, with each section offering a new perspective on the surroundings.
The garden is accessible by bus from Wuxi Railway Station with multiple routes available to reach different areas. Plan enough time to walk at a comfortable pace and enjoy the transitions between different sections of the space.
Several structures including the Four Seasons Pagoda and Flowery House sit beside clear ponds and reveal different views as light and seasons shift. The arrangement was designed so visitors naturally notice how the garden transforms throughout the year.
