Grand Buddha at Ling Shan, Bronze Buddha monument in Mashan, Wuxi, China.
The Grand Buddha at Ling Shan is a large bronze monument in Mashan Subdistrict near the northern shore of Lake Tai in Wuxi. The figure stands on a lotus base with one hand raised in a gesture of reassurance.
The monument was built in the mid-1990s as part of a project to create five large Buddha figures in different regions of China. Zhao Puchu, who led the Buddhist Association of China at the time, guided the effort to realize this work.
The Brahma Palace near the statue presents daily Buddhist performances and contains extensive collections of wood carvings, murals, and religious artifacts.
Visitors reach the site through Wuxi Sunan Shuofang Airport or trains from Shanghai and Nanjing. The approach involves walking through a complex with several levels and stairs, so comfortable footwear is advisable.
A fountain performance with nine dragons depicts a mythological scene of water jets bathing the newborn Buddha, shown several times each day. The show combines water, movement, and music in a choreographed sequence.
