Stone Hall of Jijian Temple
Stone Hall of Jijian Temple, Buddhist temple hall on Tianchi Mountain, Suzhou, China.
Stone Hall of Jijian Temple is a Yuan Dynasty structure on Tianchi Mountain featuring traditional Chinese architecture with a south-facing orientation and a width of approximately 7.6 meters (25 feet). The building preserves Buddhist sculptures and architectural details from its original period.
The structure was built in 1357 during the Yuan Dynasty as a center for Buddhist worship on the mountain. It underwent modifications during the Ming Dynasty while retaining its foundational design and carved stone elements.
The hall contains two stone chambers, each housing Buddha statues carved from single rock blocks for ritual purposes. You can observe how these carved spaces were designed to serve the spiritual practices of Buddhist monks.
The site sits on a mountain, so expect a walk uphill and wear suitable footwear for uneven terrain. The area tends to be damp due to its elevation, especially following rain.
Stone tables inside display intricate lotus carvings on their surfaces, showcasing the skilled stoneworking techniques of Yuan Dynasty craftsmen. These details demonstrate the fine work that went into everyday objects within the temple.
