Former residence of Yu Yue, Historic residence in Suzhou, China.
The former residence of Yu Yue is a property in Suzhou featuring five courtyards connected in a line from south to north. These sections are linked by pathways and halls, creating a unified living space.
Yu Yue received a scholarly title in 1850 and lived here until his death in 1906. During his time, the residence became an important center for learning and cultural activities in the city.
The residence shows how educated families lived in Jiangsu during the late Qing Dynasty, with spaces designed for work, study, and family life. The layout reflects the values of scholarly households from this period.
The house is located on Mayike Lane near Renmin Road in Suzhou and is easy to reach. Three of the original courtyards with their halls and gardens are open for visitors to explore.
The property suffered serious damage during the Cultural Revolution, with original gardens and pavilions destroyed. A major restoration in 1983 saved the building and opened it to the public.
