Sai Ying Pun Community Complex, ehemaliges Krankenhaus in der Volksrepublik China
The Sai Ying Pun Community Complex is a nine-storey building on High Street in the Sai Ying Pun district of Hong Kong, combining a Victorian stone facade with modern community facilities inside. The exterior features large rusticated granite blocks and arched windows, while the interior houses a community hall, a hostel, and social service offices.
The building was put up in 1892 to house medical staff at a nearby government hospital. Over the following decades it changed purpose several times, serving as a mental health ward and then an outpatient clinic, before being converted into a community complex in 1998 after years of sitting empty.
The name Sai Ying Pun refers to the old neighborhood on the western side of Hong Kong Island where the building stands. The granite arches and verandahs along the facade are open to view from the street, giving passersby a close look at 19th-century stonework in an everyday setting.
The complex sits on High Street close to Kennedy Town MTR station, making it easy to reach on foot from the surrounding neighborhood. The facade can be seen at any time from the pavement outside, so a short stop during a walk through Sai Ying Pun is enough to take it in.
After closing in 1971, the building sat empty for around 20 years and was damaged by several fires during that time. Those years of abandonment gave it a reputation as one of Hong Kong's most talked-about haunted spots, a story still remembered by older residents of the neighborhood.
