207 Des Voeux Road West, Grade II historic building in Central and Western District, Hong Kong

207 Des Voeux Road West is a four-storey pre-war tong lau built in 1921 at the corner of Des Voeux Road West and Centre Street. It is Hong Kong's only surviving right-angled corner tong lau, with balconies on its upper floors and shops below residences. Its facade faces the former waterfront, now inland after successive reclamations.

Built in 1921 at the corner of Des Voeux Road West and Centre Street, this four-storey pre-war tong lau is a Grade II historic building. It originally stood on the waterfront beside the tram tracks, but land reclamation has since left it inland. Its corner site made it Hong Kong's last surviving right-angled corner tong lau.

The building's corner position at the junction with Centre Street made its ground floor a succession of trades: a matting shop in 1934, a distillery in 1985, later a wine shop, then a newspaper stall, and in recent years a fashion store. Its name comes simply from its address on Des Voeux Road West.

The building is about three minutes on foot from HKU MTR Station and well served by public transportation. The surrounding area includes numerous shops and food vendors that give the neighborhood its everyday character.

It is the only right-angled corner tong lau left in Hong Kong, standing at the junction with Centre Street. Its sea-facing past is gone: land reclamation has left the 1921 building inland, and in August 2020 concrete fell from the Centre Street facade onto the minibus stop below, requiring scaffolding.
