Caritas Ling Yuet Sin Kindergarten, Grade III historic kindergarten in Central and Western District, Hong Kong
Caritas Ling Yuet Sin Kindergarten is a five-story building with Art Deco architecture in a T-shaped layout located on Pok Fu Lam Road. The structure combines Shanghai plaster imitating ashlar masonry with additional elements from different architectural styles, including Neo-Classical details on a side wing.
The building traces its origins to 1860 when Canossian Sisters founded an infants' home, which later transformed into its current form. In 1949, Mr. Li Po-chun donated funds to reshape the site into a modern educational facility, establishing its present function as a kindergarten.
The name combines Caritas, an international charity organization, with a Chinese name reflecting the local community it serves. Visitors can observe how the institution functions as a center for early childhood care within this historic neighborhood.
The building is located on Pok Fu Lam Road and remains an active educational facility, so viewing opportunities are limited unless there are special open days. Since it is a Grade III historic site, the exterior is accessible for those exploring the neighborhood on foot.
The vertical tower staircase is a distinctive internal feature that has been preserved and shapes movement through the building. This element connects the different floors and showcases craftsmanship from an early phase of modern construction in Hong Kong.
