Old Tsan Yuk Maternity Hospital, Grade I historic building in Central and Western District, Hong Kong
The Old Tsan Yuk Maternity Hospital is a former medical facility featuring Georgian architecture with a three-story main building, two-story staff quarters, and a basement level. The structure showcases classical design elements arranged to serve both patient care and staff accommodation.
The hospital was founded in 1922 under the Chinese Public Dispensary Committee and initially received 30 beds from Tung Wah Hospital to begin operations. This establishment marked an expansion of maternal medical services in the region.
The building is known today as the Western District Community Centre and serves as a gathering place where local residents use the lecture halls and activity rooms for community events. It remains an active part of neighborhood life with regular programs and meetings.
The facility now operates as a community center and is accessible to visitors interested in seeing the heritage building and its current use. It is best to check ahead about specific opening hours and activities available during your visit.
The construction was financed through donations from Mr. H. M. H Nemazee and local business guilds including Fishmongers and Fruit Sellers guilds who raised 94,000 Hong Kong dollars. This community funding effort shows how merchants in Hong Kong supported healthcare development.
