Tai Hing Estate, Public rental housing estate in Tuen Mun District, Hong Kong.
Tai Hing Estate is a public housing complex in Tuen Mun District comprising seven residential blocks with approximately 8,600 units. The site provides essential services including markets, postal facilities, and schools that serve the day-to-day needs of residents.
Built between 1977 and 1980 on reclaimed land from Castle Peak Bay, this was the second major public housing project in Tuen Mun. It emerged during a period when Hong Kong needed to handle rapid population growth by expanding residential developments into the New Territories.
The name draws from Cantonese, combining words meaning 'great' and 'prosperous,' reflecting the builders' hopes for the residents' well-being. Today the estate serves as a residential center where families have built their lives over decades and multiple generations have grown up together.
The estate connects to the city via two Light Rail stations, Tai Hing North and South, making commuting straightforward for residents and visitors. The grounds are walkable and feature multiple entry points that allow you to explore different areas of the development.
Before the estate was built, the site hosted a major Scout Jamboree in 1971 that brought thousands of Scouts together for an outdoor gathering. This historical event remains largely forgotten today despite being a significant moment in the location's past.
