Yantan Dam, Hydroelectric power station on Hongshui River, Guangxi, China.
Yantan Dam is a hydroelectric facility spanning 525 meters across the Hongshui River with a height of 110 meters, designed to generate power using Francis turbine technology. The structure creates a large reservoir that stretches upstream and serves as a water management system for the region.
Construction of this facility began in 1985 and the first turbine became operational in 1992, completing ahead of its original timeline. This project represented a major infrastructure development for the region during that period.
The construction of the dam required the relocation of 43,176 residents from the area, leading to new settlement communities along the reservoir.
The site can be viewed from surrounding areas, with the best vantage points available from the opposite bank of the river. Access is generally available during daylight hours, and walking along the perimeter provides good opportunities to observe the full structure.
The facility includes a ship lift system that allows vessels weighing up to 250 tons to navigate across the dam barrier. This engineering solution enables cargo transport to continue through the waterway despite the height difference created by the structure.
