Valley Road Estate, Former public housing complex in Lo Lung Hang, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Valley Road Estate was a public housing complex comprising 16 residential blocks arranged in an organized pattern along Valley Road in the Lo Lung Hang district of Kowloon. The complex housed thousands of residents and served as an important example of Hong Kong's early approach to providing affordable housing.
The complex was built in 1962 on a site previously destroyed by a devastating fire in 1961 that had wiped out a squatter settlement. The British Hong Kong Government created it as a response to urgent housing needs and as a step toward modernizing urban living conditions.
The residential complex represented a milestone in Hong Kong's public housing initiatives, providing affordable homes for thousands of families during rapid urbanization periods.
The site is no longer accessible today as the complex was demolished between 2001 and 2002. Ho Man Tin MTR station now sits on this location, serving as a connection between the Kwun Tong Line and Sha Tin Central Link.
The land where the complex stood was sold in 2010 for approximately 10.9 billion Hong Kong dollars, one of the highest auction prices in Hong Kong's history at that time. This enormous value reflects the extreme scarcity and cost of real estate in this densely packed city.
