Macao Central Library, Central cultural library in Tap Seac Square, Macau.
Macao Central Library is a public library on Tap Seac Square in Macau, spread across several floors with reading rooms, exhibition areas, and multipurpose spaces. The collections cover both Chinese and Portuguese language materials, and separate sections are set aside for children and teenagers.
The library was founded in 1895, making it one of the oldest public cultural institutions in Macau. Its current building replaced the Hotel Estoril, a casino resort that operated on this spot from the 1960s until it was cleared for the new cultural use.
The library sits on Tap Seac Square, one of the few open public spaces in dense Macau, and draws students, families, and older residents throughout the day. The square itself acts as an extension of the building, where people gather before or after visiting.
The building is easy to reach on foot from central Macau, as it sits directly on Tap Seac Square. The latticed facade filters daylight into the reading rooms, so natural light is good throughout the day without being harsh.
The building's outer shell is shaped to echo an open book, so the bookshelves inside are partially visible through the facade from the square. This means the collection itself becomes part of the exterior appearance of the building.
