Nanhai God Temple

The Nanhai God Temple is a maritime shrine in Huangpu featuring multiple altars, shrines, and traditional architectural elements dedicated to sea worship. The complex displays classical building styles with intricate carvings, curved roofs, and courtyards that organize the space for devotion and ritual.

The temple was founded centuries ago to serve sailors and merchants traveling ancient trade routes across the seas. It grew into an important center where seafarers sought blessings for their voyages and safe passage through dangerous waters.

The temple serves as a gathering place where fishing communities and merchants make offerings and prayers for protection at sea. Throughout the year, visitors can witness people lighting incense and participating in ceremonies that honor the maritime traditions of the region.

This is the last surviving ancient Sea God Temple in China, located in Miaotou Village at the heart of Guangzhou. The site has weathered multiple demolitions and reconstructions while preserving a rare legacy of maritime worship throughout Chinese history.
