Dashan Pagoda, Chinese pagoda
Dashan Pagoda is a tall brick structure in Shaoxing with simple lines and a pointed top reaching toward the sky. The building displays carved details on its edges and corners that show ancient craftsmanship, and from its top level visitors can see across the city and surrounding countryside.
The pagoda was built during the Liang Dynasty around 504 AD, making it over 1500 years old. Over centuries it was damaged and rebuilt multiple times, with its current form dating from the Qing Dynasty, and major restoration work completed in 1957.
The name Dashan means 'Big Mountain' in Chinese, reflecting its role as a spiritual landmark. Visitors can observe ongoing religious practices like burning incense and quiet moments of reflection that connect present-day life with ancient traditions.
The structure is open year-round and visitors can climb stairs to upper levels to enjoy the best views. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal for a visit when light is soft and the surroundings remain peaceful.
