Kuahuqiao

Kuahuqiao is an archaeological excavation site near the Qiantang River where researchers have uncovered the remains of stilt villages. These settlements were built on swampy ground and show how early communities learned to adapt to challenging terrain.

The site was discovered in the 1970s during brick factory construction and revealed settlements dating back to around 5000 BCE. The excavations show how this early civilization already practiced agriculture and settled in swampy regions.

The earliest known dugout canoe and evidence of early peach cultivation were found at this location. These discoveries show that people here already developed ways to travel over water and grow fruit.
