Hangchow University, Historical university site in Hangzhou, China
Hangchow University is a former academic institution in Hangzhou that occupies 43 hectares along the Qiantang River near the Six Harmonies Pagoda. The campus buildings display early 20th-century architectural styles and are now integrated into Zhejiang University's Zhijiang Campus.
The school was founded in 1845 as a Christian missionary institution in Ningbo before moving to Hangzhou in 1867. It adopted the name Hangchow University in 1914, establishing its academic role and educational mission in its new location.
The institution helped introduce Western academic customs to China's education system through its graduation ceremonies with formal academic dress. Walking through the preserved buildings today, you can sense how this place bridged different educational worlds.
The grounds are accessible to visitors interested in exploring the preserved buildings as part of the Zhijiang Campus. Weekday visits offer the best experience since normal university activity brings the campus to life and helps you feel the everyday rhythm of the place.
The name Zhijiang comes from the Z-shaped curve of the Qiantang River at this location, with 'Zhi' representing the character Z itself. This geographical feature inspired the campus name when it was established at this bend in the river.
