Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum, Ceramic museum in Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, China
The Guan Kiln Museum of the Southern Song Dynasty is a facility on the grounds of a former imperial ceramic production site in Hangzhou. The museum displays exhibition spaces and preserved kilns from the period when ceramics were made here for the court.
The production site developed after the royal family moved to Hangzhou in 1138 and established new workshops to supply the court. These workshops became an important center for making high-quality ceramics during that period.
This was a center for imperial ceramic artistry, showing how craftspeople worked directly for the court. Visitors can see how artisans of that era used their techniques and the importance their work held for the royal family.
The museum is easy to reach and offers guided tours to help visitors understand the ancient kilns and workshops better. It helps to allow time to explore all exhibition areas and view the preserved firing kilns.
A large firing kiln is set into a slope and shows the original construction using earth bricks, which was used back then for firing ceramics. The construction and positioning of this kiln gives visitors today a rare look into the actual working conditions at this location.
