Badaling Zoo, Wildlife sanctuary at Badaling Mountain, China

Badaling Zoo is a mountain wildlife park at the foot of the Badaling Great Wall, next to the Badaling Expressway in Yanqing District, Beijing. It covers nearly 6,000 mu and is divided into five zones: a wildlife viewing area, an ecological protection area, a forest sightseeing area, an ancient culture area and a recreation area. It keeps over 100 species and close to 10,000 wild animals.

Badaling Zoo opened in May 1998 at the foot of the Badaling Great Wall, next to the Badaling Expressway. In 2007, a new plan for the Badaling-Shisanling scenic area proposed its demolition, but the plan was not carried out. In July 2002, the zoo donated animals to Afghanistan, including a pair of African lions named Zhuangzhuang and Kaini, as well as brown bears, peacocks, pearl chickens and black-boned chickens.

The zoo sits by the Badaling Great Wall parking area in Yanqing District and is laid out in five zones: a wildlife viewing area, an ecological protection area, a forest sightseeing area, an ancient culture area and a leisure area. In July 2002 it sent animals to Afghanistan, including the African lions Zhuangzhuang and Kaini, brown bears, peacocks, pearl chickens and black-boned chickens.

The facility is accessible via the Badaling Expressway with bus connections from central Beijing arriving regularly. The grounds are extensive, so comfortable walking shoes and several hours are recommended for exploring the different sections.

In July 2002 the zoo sent a batch of animals to Afghanistan after export quarantine, including a pair of African lions, Zhuangzhuang and Kaini, in their first oestrus, plus brown bears, peacocks, pearl chickens and black-boned chickens requested by Afghanistan.
