Wan Chai Temporary Promenade, Waterfront promenade in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong.
The Wan Chai Temporary Promenade is a waterfront walkway along Victoria Harbour in the Wan Chai District of Hong Kong, with grassy areas, seating and trees near the Convention Centre. The path runs on reclaimed land and links several sections of the shoreline into one continuous public outdoor space.
The promenade opened in 2021 on land reclaimed from Victoria Harbour, as part of an effort to return the waterfront to public use. It forms one section of a longer planned coastal path that is intended to eventually run the full length of the harbour.
The word 'temporary' in the name signals that this walkway is a placeholder until a permanent waterfront path is finished. Despite that, visitors can see families, joggers and people sitting on the grass every day, treating it as a regular part of the neighborhood.
The promenade is open and free to walk at any time, with tree cover offering some shade on hot days. Solar-powered lights along the path make it easy to visit in the evening as well.
Although it is described as temporary, the promenade has received international recognition from urban design professionals as a reference for public waterfront spaces. This means a provisional path has ended up influencing how planners think about permanent projects elsewhere.
