Tat Tak School, Haunted primary school in Hong Kong
An abandoned three-story school building with distinctive green window frames and faded yellow facade stands amid overgrown grounds in Yuen Long District. The classrooms remain furnished with deserted desks, chairs, and blackboards, while graffiti and decay mark the interiors. Broken windows and crumbling plaster document decades of neglect since the facility's closure.
The primary school closed in 1998 due to declining enrollment after serving children from the surrounding rural community for several decades. Following closure, the building gradually fell into disrepair and became the subject of local speculation about unexplained events. Various media reports during the 2000s amplified the school's reputation as a site of alleged paranormal activity.
The school appears in numerous local ghost stories and has become a well-known site for people interested in paranormal phenomena and urban legends in Hong Kong. The abandoned facility symbolizes the transformation of rural educational institutions in the New Territories during the region's rapid urbanization.
The site is not officially open to the public and visitors enter at their own risk due to structural instability. Accessible by bus from Yuen Long town center, the school sits roughly half a mile (800 meters) from the nearest bus stop. Entering abandoned buildings may carry legal consequences and safety risks from unstable structures and sharp debris.
Visitors report finding abandoned personal items in the classrooms, including dusty textbooks from the 1990s and student artwork still hanging on faded bulletin boards. Some rooms contain old typewriters and audio equipment documenting the educational methods used in rural Hong Kong schools before the digital era. The top floor preserves a small library with Chinese and English textbooks.
