Yancheng Prison, building in China
Yancheng Prison is a large facility in Sanhe near Beijing operated directly by the Ministry of Justice. It has separate sections for men and women, sports facilities such as soccer fields and outdoor activity areas, well-maintained buildings, and cells with bunk beds accommodating up to eight inmates per room.
The facility opened in late 2002 and differed from most other prisons in China by being controlled directly by the Ministry of Justice rather than local authorities. It was established as a model institution to teach improved prison management methods to officials throughout the country.
The facility is sometimes called the White House because of its clean, orderly architecture and well-maintained appearance. Visitors notice the landscaped grounds with flowers and trees that create a calm, organized environment unlike typical prison settings.
Visitors can tour various areas including cell blocks, medical facilities, and workshops to learn how the facility operates. Allow time to see the work areas, classrooms, and kitchen to gain a complete picture of daily routines and prison management.
The facility serves as a training center where prison officials from throughout China learn new management methods and best practices. This makes it a teaching institution that influences prison operations across the country.
