Chiang's Ancestral Temple, Ancestral hall in Fenghua District, China

Chiang's Ancestral Temple, formerly Sān Fáng Táng Qián, stands on the north side of Wuling Road in Xikou. Its southern new hall, built in 1929, opens through a three-bay glazed-tile archway inscribed "Loyalty and Filial Piety Passed Down" in Chiang Kai-shek's hand; behind it a two-storey brick-and-timber hall holds the ancestral tablets. A wall with a round moon gate links it to the northern old hall, whose stage faces the Yongsi Hall.

The old hall's construction date is unknown; records show repairs in 1695 and 1716, during the Kangxi reign. In 1929 Chiang Kai-shek funded a new hall north of the old one, larger than his nearby Fenggao residence. In April 1937 his brother Jiang Jieqing's funeral was held here, attended by Feng Yuxiang and Yan Xishan, with over a thousand banquet tables. The gate was destroyed by a typhoon in 1956; the hall was restored and opened in 2001.

The hall's old name, Sanfang Tangqian, refers to the third branch of the Jiang family, whose ancestral tablets stand in stepped rows on the new hall's upper floor. The old hall's stage faces the main hall, and its two-storey side wings have windows for watching opera. Since 2001 the halls have displayed photographs and texts on the Jiang family and cross-strait relations.

The complex sits on the north side of Wuling Road in Xikou, with the new hall to the south and the old hall to the north, joined by a wall pierced by a round moon gate and two side doors. Enter through the three-door glazed archway, whose central door is higher than the side ones; the central lintel plaque "Loyalty and Filial Piety Passed Down" is in Chiang Kai-shek's own hand. The old hall's gatehouse was destroyed by a typhoon in 1956, so the surviving gate, stage and main hall are what remain to walk through.
