Yau Ma Tei Car Park Building, Public parking structure in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong.
The Yau Ma Tei Car Park Building is a multi-story parking garage at 250 Shanghai Street designed to hold 770 cars and 76 motorcycles across its levels. The structure serves the parking needs of a densely populated Kowloon neighborhood through its functional layout.
The building was constructed in 1970 and later modified in 1977 when a major roadway was integrated into its structure. This change reflected the area's evolution as infrastructure expanded to meet growing transportation demands.
The site once held a traditional market, and now its transformation into a parking structure shows how the neighborhood shifted from everyday commerce to modern transportation needs. This change reflects the way older districts adapt to contemporary urban life.
The parking structure is accessed from Shanghai Street and can be located by looking for the building at its main entrance near the main roads of the area. Note that the facility has not operated since 2021 and is currently undergoing changes at the site.
The structure was engineered to allow a major highway to pass directly through several of its floors, creating an unusual architectural solution for a cramped urban site. This integration made it possible to efficiently use both parking and traffic routes on the same property.
