Temple Street Night Market, Night market in Yau Ma Tei district, Hong Kong.
Temple Street Night Market is a night market in the Yau Ma Tei district of Hong Kong, stretching across several street blocks. The stalls line both sides of the road closely, offering clothing, electronics, toys, and souvenirs.
During the 1920s, singers and storytellers gathered here to entertain passersby, which gradually turned into an informal trading spot. By the middle of the century, the market grew into its current form and established itself as a daily meeting point for sellers and buyers.
Fortune tellers sit under their tents, reading faces, palms, or using birds that pick paper strips with predictions. Visitors can also listen to groups performing Cantonese opera melodies while vendors prepare steamed buns and grilled seafood.
The stalls start setting up in the early afternoon, but most offerings appear only after dark when the food stalls also open. Space on the pavement and between the stalls can get very tight, so it is easier to come without large luggage.
Some corner stalls sell vintage cameras and old watches that attract collectors from across the city. In quieter side streets, you can also see small groups who spontaneously sing traditional songs or play instruments.
