Xiqu Centre, Theatre venue in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong
Xiqu Centre is a theatre building in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong, dedicated to Chinese opera and traditional stagecraft. The complex holds a large auditorium with more than a thousand seats, eight studios for rehearsals and instruction, a seminar room, and a smaller tea house theatre with traditional seating arranged around round tables.
Construction of the centre began in September 2013 as part of a broader project to promote culture in Kowloon. The opening took place in 2018 and marked the first completed theatre building in the city's new cultural district.
The entrance hall resembles a stage curtain and opens into a space that translates traditional Chinese lantern elements into modern architecture. The building's name literally means 'theatre center' and connects old opera traditions with present-day use through performances, workshops, and public programs for classical Chinese stagecraft.
The centre sits on Austin Road West in Tsim Sha Tsui and opens daily from 10 AM to 10:30 PM, with a direct link to Austin MTR station. Information about current performances and events is available at the reception desk, and the building is accessible throughout.
The tea house theatre seats audiences at round tables and serves traditional tea and dim sum during performances, recreating the experience of early opera houses in Hong Kong. These shows often run shorter and allow a relaxed introduction to Chinese opera forms, where eating and watching blend together.
