The city stands along the Itz River at the edge of the Thuringian Forest, with the Veste Coburg fortress overlooking the medieval town center.
In 1530, Martin Luther spent six months at Veste Coburg fortress during the Diet of Augsburg, where he worked on translating the Bible.
