Merzig, District capital in Saarland, Germany.
Merzig is the district capital of Merzig-Wadern in Saarland, sitting along the left bank of the Saar River among wooded hills. The town spreads across several districts with a center that includes residential areas, shopping streets, and parks.
Roman coin finds and remains from the fourth century document the early settlement of this area. In 1816, Merzig became part of Prussia following the Napoleonic Wars and developed into an administrative center.
The Expeditionary Museum Werner Freund, Museum of Local History in Fellenberg Castle, and Saarland Psychiatric Museum present regional collections and exhibitions.
The town center is easily walkable and most public facilities are close together. Buses connect the surrounding districts with the core of the town and run regularly during the day.
A large tent theater on the outskirts has presented new musical productions every year since 2012 with well-known performers from Germany. The temporary venue draws audiences from across the region and is set up each season.
