Merzig-Wadern is a district in Saarland located along the borders with France and Luxembourg. The region comprises several towns and municipalities, including Merzig and Wadern, which give the district its name.
The district was formed in 1816 under Prussian rule and experienced division after World War I, when the Merzig area became part of the Saar territory while Wadern remained Prussian. Both parts reunited in 1946 following reunification.
The district coat of arms displays symbols of historical territories, including the cross of Trier, elements from Lorraine, a wolf hook for Dagstuhl, and a lion for Luxembourg.
