Zeche Carl

Zeche Carl is an industrial monument on a former coal mine site in Altenessen with preserved buildings from the 1800s including a shaft and engine house. The grounds contain several structures that show what a working mine looked like and now serve various artistic and cultural purposes.

The mine was founded in 1855 by the Hercules Company and extracted high-quality anthracite coal from underground. Starting in 1883 it began producing Carl Coke, which brought the operation significant economic success.
