SANAA building at Zollverein Essen, Minimalist architecture building at Zollverein coal mine complex, Essen, Germany

The SANAA building is a 35 meter (115 ft) cubic structure at the Zollverein coal mine site, distinguished by 134 window openings that punctuate its white exterior. Its four floors and rooftop terrace span approximately 5,000 square meters (54,000 sq ft), with the window placement creating constantly changing patterns of natural light throughout the interior.

Completed in 2006, the building marks the transformation of the Zollverein coal site from an active mining operation into a cultural and educational destination. The Japanese architects SANAA created a contemporary design that complements the site's industrial heritage.

The building houses the Folkwang University of the Arts, transforming the former coal site into a living center for creative learning today. Visitors can observe students at work and explore rotating exhibitions that showcase their design, photography, and communication projects.

The site is accessible by public transportation and offers parking for visitors arriving by car. Plan to spend several hours exploring the building, exhibitions, and the surrounding historic structures at a leisurely pace.

The building employs a carefully considered energy concept where the window placement serves both to minimize heat loss and optimize natural light distribution throughout the day. International designers contributed custom furniture and interior elements that enhance the learning environment.
