Zeche Helene

Zeche Helene is a former coal mine in Essen with preserved industrial buildings and a distinctive administrative structure from the early 20th century. The complex displays typical mining infrastructure with various operational buildings that once organized work both underground and on the surface.

The mine began coal extraction in 1873 and grew into a major production facility in the Ruhr region. Over time, the mining industry faded from the area, and the closed facility was later repurposed for new uses.

The former mining site now serves as a gathering place for the neighborhood, where people exercise and meet together. This shift from coal extraction to community space reflects how the region has transformed its industrial past into modern life.

The site now offers sports facilities including badminton, fitness, and beach volleyball with regular courses available. Visitors should plan ahead to book activities and check current hours before making a trip.

The shaft facility reached considerable depths and connected with neighboring mines to form a larger production system. This underground integration allowed for more efficient resource use and showed the technical ambition of that era.
