Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park, Public park in Altenessen district, Essen, Germany
Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park is a ten-hectare green space in Essen with extensive lawns, mature trees, walking paths, and various recreation areas distributed across the site. The area comprises several landscaped sections that serve different purposes for visitors.
The park opened in 1897 to celebrate Kaiser Wilhelm I's 100th birthday. The municipality purchased the land from farmers Westerdorf and Helbeck to create this public space.
A stone sculpture from the 1980s by Persian artist Oveis Saheb Djawaher consists of five-meter-high basalt lava columns surrounded by smaller stones. This art installation shapes how people experience the landscape and demonstrates the artistic contributions that define the public space.
The park is easily reached by several tram and bus lines, including 172, NE1, U11, and U17, via the accessible Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park station. The central location makes it straightforward for all visitors to arrive.
A memorial pavilion in the park was decorated with graffiti art in 2018 honoring Chester Bennington, singer of Linkin Park. This special tribute shows how the space is recognized by fans from around the world.
