Grainau

Grainau extends across 49 square kilometers at the base of Zugspitze mountain, incorporating the villages of Obergrainau, Untergrainau, Hammersbach, Schmölz, and Eibsee.

The municipality developed as part of the County of Werdenfels during medieval times, maintaining strong connections with neighboring Alpine communities through centuries of shared governance.

Local residents maintain Bavarian traditions through regular community gatherings, seasonal festivals, and traditional architectural styles visible in residential and commercial buildings.

Visitors can reach Grainau through regional trains to Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, followed by a short bus ride or taxi service to any of its five constituent villages.

The territory includes two natural lakes, Badersee and Eibsee, which reflect the surrounding mountain peaks and create mirror images of the Alpine landscape.
