Palace of Aachen, Royal palace in Aachen, Germany.
The Palace of Aachen features an octagonal chapel with Roman columns, massive bronze doors, and a central dome supported by eight pillars.
Charlemagne established this palace as the center of the Carolingian Empire in the 790s, making it his permanent residence until his death in 814.
The palace complex contained a scriptorium where scholars produced manuscripts and a workshop where skilled craftsmen created precious metalwork and jewelry.
While the original palace structure no longer exists, visitors can explore the preserved Palatine Chapel, which now forms the central part of Aachen Cathedral.
The palace included a 50-acre thermal complex with a swimming pool that could accommodate one hundred people simultaneously.
