Elmstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Palatinate Forest, Germany.
The castle ruins stand at 290 meters above sea level on the northern side of the Speyerbach valley, featuring remaining curtain walls and shield structures.
Built in the 12th century, Elmstein Castle monitored the valley route until its decline after damages from the Thirty Years War and Palatine Succession War.
The castle's noble occupants held the title of Schenk, meaning cup bearer, reflecting the medieval social structure of the Electorate of the Palatinate.
The site contains visible sections of original defensive walls, residential buildings, and fortification elements that demonstrate medieval military architecture.
Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria transferred control of this strategic fortification to his cousin, the Count Palatine, marking its role in regional politics.
