Ehrenmal auf dem Straßburger Platz, War memorial at Straßburger Platz, Osnabrück, Germany
The war memorial at Straßburger Platz is a monument in Osnabrück featuring a Corinthian column set on a square base. Three flights of steps approach the column from different sides, and ancient helmets ornament the corners.
The memorial was erected in 1880 at Neumarkt and commemorates soldiers from the Osnabrück region who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. In 1928, it was moved to Straßburger Platz to address growing traffic at its original location.
The name of the square refers to the city of Strasbourg, underlining this region's historical importance to Prussia. Visitors can see how the city acknowledges this connection through the naming of the public space.
The square is located in the Westerberg district and is easily accessible on foot. The memorial stands freely in open space and can be viewed from all sides, with the steps providing direct access to the base.
The base bears engraved names of battle locations in France and fallen soldiers from various districts of the region including Osnabrück, Fürstenau, Iburg, and others. This detail transforms the memorial into a local record of war losses from a broader area.
