Schloss Burgberg, Medieval castle in Giengen an der Brenz, Germany
Schloss Burgberg is a castle in Giengen an der Brenz built from two four-story structures with pitched roofs that face each other across a narrow internal courtyard. Ancient fortification walls with irregular layouts form part of the surrounding structure.
The castle was first documented in 1425 and suffered major destruction during the Thirty Years' War in 1630. Rebuilding came in 1664 under the direction of Count Joachim von Grafeneck.
Maria von Linden, born here in 1869, became the first woman to hold a professorship title in Germany. The castle's connection to her achievement reflects its role in the history of women's advancement in German academia.
The property remains in private ownership by the Badmann family since 1963 and is not open to the public. You can only view the exterior from the surrounding area without access to the interior or guided visits.
The walls display irregular patterns that hint at much older fortification techniques that predate the written record. These earlier layers provide clues about the people and construction phases that came before the documented history.
