Palatine Chapel, Palatine chapel in Aachen, Germany.
The octagonal chapel features a central dome supported by marble columns, with a double-shell structure and an upper gallery encircling the main space.
Construction of the chapel began in 792 under Charlemagne's direction, with consecration by Pope Leo III occurring in 805 as part of the Palace of Aachen.
The chapel served as the coronation site for German kings and Holy Roman Emperors from 936 to 1531, establishing its role in medieval European history.
The interior contains a sixteenth-century marble throne and a twelfth-century chandelier commissioned by Frederick I, which remain preserved for visitors to examine.
Ancient columns from Rome and Ravenna were integrated into the chapel's design, connecting the structure to classical Roman architectural traditions.
