Markt 4, Weimar

Markt 4 is a historic pharmacy building at Weimar's market square, featuring distinctive bay windows and a portal with stone-carved seating niches on the northern side. The building currently houses the Weimar Tourist Information Center and will remain there until 2027 while the city hall undergoes renovations.

The building was established in 1506 and served as Weimar's only pharmacy until the Lion Pharmacy opened in 1801. Following wartime destruction, it was rebuilt in 1988 and now stands as a registered cultural monument preserving its pharmaceutical heritage.

The name reflects its role as the Court Pharmacy, which supported scientific endeavors during the Classical period. Visitors can still observe its prominent location at the market square and notice the distinctive bay windows and stone-carved alcoves that hint at this important past.

The site is located directly at the market square in the city center and is easy to reach on foot. You can visit the information center housed within, though construction work in the area may affect access or operations temporarily.

A pharmacist named Wilhelm Heinrich Sebastian Bucholz conducted balloon experiments here during the Classical period with support from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This early scientific collaboration reveals an unexpected chapter in the building's past connected to groundbreaking experimentation.
