Moni Profiti Ilia

Moni Profiti Ilia is an Orthodox monastery situated on Mount Profitis Ilias at approximately 565 meters elevation, overlooking the entire island of Santorini. The structure features low stone buildings with white walls, narrow passageways, and courtyards that organize monastic daily life.

The monastery was founded in 1711 and developed into a center of Greek Orthodox faith on the island. Over the centuries it served as a spiritual refuge, documenting Santorini's religious history to this day.

The monastery bears the name of Prophet Elias, venerated in Orthodox tradition. Visitors sense a deep connection to faith here, reflected in daily rituals and the careful arrangement of spaces.

The monastery welcomes visitors year-round and is best reached on foot from Pyrgos via hiking trails. The paths are steady but not technically demanding, so anyone with some time can make the climb.

Rare telescopes on the roof enabled generations of monks to pursue astronomical observations alongside their spiritual duties. This blend of celestial study and faith sets the place apart from other monasteries in Greece.
