Panagia Giatrissa

Panagia Giatrissa is an Orthodox monastery situated in the Taygetus Mountains at an elevation of around 1040 meters. The complex features a Byzantine-style church with decorative elements and a smaller chapel, both positioned to offer views across the Laconian and Messinian Gulfs.

The monastery was founded on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Athena and underwent reconstruction in 1683 following a period of abandonment caused by regional conflicts. This restoration marked a turning point in reviving the sanctuary during the early modern period.

The name 'Giatrissa' comes from Greek and means 'Healer', reflecting the local devotion to the Virgin Mary. People visit seeking spiritual comfort and blessings, showing how central this place remains to the religious life of the surrounding communities.
