Stadium of Delphi

Stadium of Delphi, Ancient sports arena in Delphi, Greece.

The stadium of Delphi is an ancient sports venue with stone seating arranged in ascending tiers along a rectangular running track. The track stretches about 178 meters (585 feet) in length and roughly 25 meters (82 feet) in width.

The stadium was built in the fourth century BCE as a venue for athletic competitions. It underwent modifications over time and acquired its stone seating arrangement during the second century CE.

The stadium hosted the Pythian Games, where athletes from Greek city-states gathered to test their skills. Walking through the seating areas, visitors sense how central these competitions were to the identity of ancient Greek communities.

The stadium is open to visitors as part of the wider Delphi archaeological site and requires some climbing to explore the seating areas. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the stone paths and seating can be uneven underfoot.

Stone markers still visible on the track show exactly where ancient runners positioned their feet at the starting line. These traces offer visitors a direct window into the precise mechanics of ancient athletic competitions.
