Platanitsi, Blue Flag beach in Sithonia, Greece
Platanitsi is a beach on the eastern coast of Sithonia peninsula with light sand, shallow water, and dense pine forest providing natural shade. The bay has a gentle shape and is sheltered by two headlands that keep the water calm.
The area was used by fishing communities since ancient times, who valued the natural bays and sheltered waters. Modern development as a recreation destination began only in the second half of the 20th century.
The beach offers views toward Mount Athos, a significant religious site housing Eastern Orthodox monasteries on the neighboring peninsula.
The beach is easily reached by car and has an organized parking area near the entrance. Visitors should arrive early, especially on weekends, since the bays are limited in size and fill up quickly.
The northern section borders several small coves, including Orange Beach, which form a series of distinct coastal formations. Swimmers can explore the connected beaches without leaving the water.
