4th arrondissement of Lyon
4th arrondissement of Lyon, Administrative district on Croix-Rousse hill, Lyon, France
The fourth arrondissement extends over 293 hectares at an elevation of 250 meters between the Rhône and Saône rivers in northern Lyon.
Created in 1852 during the annexation of surrounding communes, this district became the center of silk production with numerous workshops in the 19th century.
The district maintains its local market traditions with the daily Croix-Rousse market and specialized organic produce sales every Saturday morning.
Two stations of metro line C, Croix-Rousse and Hénon, connect the district to central Lyon, supplemented by multiple bus routes throughout the area.
The Gros Caillou, a granite block transported by glaciers from the Alps, was discovered during tunnel construction in 1861 and remains a district symbol.
