16th arrondissement of Paris

The 16th arrondissement stretches across the western part of the city between the Jardins du Trocadéro and the Bois de Boulogne, covering the neighborhoods of Auteuil, Muette, Porte-Dauphine, and Chaillot. The area features wide streets, parks along the Seine, and several museums.

The district came into being in January 1860 during a municipal reorganization that expanded the city from twelve to twenty arrondissements and incorporated formerly independent communes. The annexation brought villages such as Passy, Auteuil, and parts of Chaillot under city administration.

The district follows the numbering system established after the 1860 reform, arranged in a clockwise spiral from the center outward. Wide avenues lined with sandstone buildings from the 19th century shape many streets and give the residential area its understated character.

Metro lines 1, 2, 6, 9, and 10 connect the western district with the center and offer several transfer points within the area. Numerous bus routes supplement the network and serve neighborhoods farther from metro stations.

The area houses both the Parc des Princes stadium and the Roland Garros tennis complex, making it the main location for professional sports in the capital. The two sporting venues sit just a few hundred meters apart in the southwestern part of the district.
