Laugerie-Haute, Prehistoric rock shelter in Les Eyzies, France
The limestone cliffs of Laugerie-Haute contain a 180-meter-long shelter with multiple archaeological layers stretching across 35 meters in depth.
Archaeological excavations between 1920 and 1935 by Denis Peyrony and Elie Peyrony revealed 42 distinct sediment levels dating from 33,000 BC to 12,000 BC.
The shelter contains engravings, bas-reliefs, and decorated animal bones that demonstrate the artistic practices of Upper Paleolithic inhabitants.
Access to Laugerie-Haute requires advance reservations through the Cave of Font-de-Gaume office at +33 5 53 06 86 00.
A volcanic eruption approximately 14,000 years ago caused the shelter ceiling to collapse, preserving the archaeological layers beneath.
