Lac d'Ansabère, Mountain lake in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France
Lac d'Ansabère is a mountain lake in the French Pyrenees situated at approximately 1,860 meters elevation, surrounded by granite peaks and green pastures. The water sits in a natural basin framed by steep mountain slopes on all sides.
The lake formed during the last glacial period when glaciers carved out the basin and created a natural water reservoir. This ancient geological process thousands of years ago shaped the mountain terrain visible today.
Shepherds in the area have long used the surrounding grasslands to graze their flocks, maintaining agricultural traditions that shape the landscape to this day. This way of life is still visible in how the land is managed and cared for.
The lake is accessible via a hiking trail of approximately 9 to 10 kilometers starting from Pont Lamary, requiring roughly 4 to 5 hours of walking. The route involves significant elevation gain, so solid footwear and mountain hiking experience are advisable.
The lake sits at the westernmost location of all Pyrenean lakes, sharing its longitude with other alpine lakes such as Lac Chourique. This geographic peculiarity makes it a notable point on the map of the mountain range.
