Charmant Som rises to 1,867 meters (6,125 feet) within the Chartreuse Mountains and is surrounded by alpine meadows across its slopes. The mountain is defined by expansive pasture areas that roll gently across its sides.
Local shepherds have managed the alpine pastures since medieval times, directly shaping how the landscape looks today. A road was constructed between World War I and World War II to improve access to the area.
The summit lies within the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, offering habitat for rare plant and animal species visible across the open meadows. The protected landscape shapes the area with its open pastures and distinctive limestone formations.
You can reach the summit via marked trails from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, with the ascent taking roughly 90 minutes. The route is easy to follow and well-maintained, making it ideal for a half-day outing.
This location represents the final spot in Isere where cheese is made using traditional methods and sold directly at the mountain site. This age-old practice shows how mountain farmers still work with their surroundings.
