Cime de Mercantour

Cime de Mercantour is a mountain summit in the Alpes-Maritimes reaching 2251 meters high, featuring steep slopes and rocky outcrops that create a distinctive profile against the Alpine sky. The terrain is typical of high mountains, with exposed stone, patches of snow in early summer, and sweeping views across the surrounding French and Italian peaks.

The mountain served as a crossing point for medieval trade routes connecting French and Italian valleys, enabling commerce and exchange between the regions. These passages were vital for merchants and travelers, and they continue to shape the cultural connection between both countries.

Local shepherds maintain traditional summer grazing practices on the mountain slopes, continuing centuries-old pastoral traditions in the French Alps.

The ascent requires mountain equipment and good fitness, taking approximately six hours round trip from Boréon village. Good weather and sturdy shoes are necessary since the terrain is rocky and sometimes exposed, particularly in warmer months.

This area is a natural meeting point for Alpine ibex from France and Italy that converge here during seasonal migrations. Visitors may observe these wild animals in their natural habitat when conditions and timing allow.
