Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi is a hillside city in eastern Georgia surrounded by ancient walls with towers and gates protecting the entire settlement. Houses cluster closely together, streets are narrow, and views of the landscape below appear from many corners.

A Georgian king founded this settlement in the 18th century and built fortifications to protect the region from outside attacks. This defensive structure shaped the layout and appearance of the place, which has remained largely unchanged to this day.

The city is named after a local saint and functions as a hub for the region's wine tradition. Visitors experience this through encounters with family-run wineries and the generous hospitality that characterizes the area.

The place is best explored on foot since most points of interest are close together, but lanes are steep and paths are uneven. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to wander slowly and discover different corners.

A celebrated Georgian painter of the 20th century created some of his most famous works here and there is a space documenting his life and practice. This artistic connection makes the place a special destination for art lovers.
